Moving Forward

This week we are focused on....drum roll please...Multiplication! We will be focused on using multiplication to solve problems. At home, please make sure your student is continuously reviewing their multiplication facts. We will continue to work on multiplication until next week. Students will benefit from practicing real world problems such as preparing for a party and making snack bags, etc. This week we do not have school on Friday!

Week 4

Happy Monday! Hello parents and students we are currently working addition and subtraction with regrouping. Your student should be practicing this at home nightly. To help your student be successful, having them add up a few items from the newspaper is a great idea on a budget would help them greatly. We are also working on multiple step problem solving as it relates to addition and subtraction. Students are encouraged to come up with their own multiple step problems at home. We will have a test on Friday related to addition and subtraction. Example of Multi-Step Problem: At the pizza party, Vida won 1,959 tickets, Marlon won 2,283 tickets, James won 4,583 tickets, and Ray won some tickets. Together they won 10,845 tickets. How many tickets did Ray win? This was one of our problems that we did in class. Mrs. T

Week 3

This week we are moving on from place value. Please be sure that your student can draw a place value chart from the millions to the thousandths place. This week we will be focusing on Addition and Subtraction with multiple step problem solving, as well as rounding whole numbers and decimals. At home, your student will benefit from rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole number. They will also benefit from looking in the newspaper and adding up a total amount of numbers and subtracting it from some type of budget. For example, if you went to the store with $10.00, and you purchase one item for $1.00, another item for $1.50, 2 items for .50. How much change would you receive? They should be able to answer this question. Students will continue to have homework each night this week. Please contact me if you have any questions.

On to week 2!

We have been focused this first week on getting to know each other and learning class routines in math and science!

This week we are working on place value and understanding how to read, write, compare and order numbers through the billions. At home this week, students can practice by making up whole numbers and decimals that go out at least 10-12 places. For example,

_ _ _, _ _ _, _ _ _, _ _ _  Students should be able to label each place. Example 2: 435,269,000,142 Students should be able to read this number, as well as write it in word form, and expanded form. Expanded form means breaking each part down. 400,000,000,000+30,000,000,000+5,000,000,000+200,000,000+60,000,000+9,000,000+100+40+2

Students can expect to have a quiz on Friday, September 5, 2013! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Please check your student's Math Notebook for classroom notes.
